Can my baby really be 6?

Big Birthday Electric Guitar...Rock on Hank!

Birthday Party #1

Birthday Party #2
It seems like we were just dropping off Hannah (peeper #1) to go have Hank (peeper #2) ... in fact, we even managed to run by Babies R Us for some blue bubblegum cigars ... this is what baby boys do to daddy's! I still have hard time droppping Hank off for Kindergarten some days...he doesn't seem big enough to be getting out of the car with big sister Hannah and walking into school with a back pack and his hair done to a T (by himself I might add ... I mean, how many 6 year olds do their own "do"?). Hank was so ready to be 6 ... seems like he had a countdown going for a couple of months which of course extended into, "It's still my birthday week" .... Hank is constant entertainment ... funny, smart and of course handsome, like his daddy. We were at a Christmas program last week and the "angels" came dancing along on the stage ... Hank leans over to me and says, "Mom, those are not angels ... they don't have those circle things on their head" .... talk about sweet and funny at the same time ... that is my Hanker! I love how he wants me to "lay with him" every night and read to him. This is my baby who wanted me to "rock me mommy" until he was about 4 ... such a snuggle bug and I guess that's how he became my "love bug". I like to ask him if he's still going to be my "love bug" when he goes to college (can't even begin to imagine those days ... heck, I barely got through Pre-K graduation ... it's not going to get any easier with my Hankie. So, here's to my big 6 year old "baby" ... Happy Sweet 6th Birthday to my Hankie, Hanker, the Hankinator and of course, my love bug!

Sweet 6th Basketball Birthday!

I was so excited when my friend Julie (be sure to check out her sweet blog too - http://justjuleseveryday.blogspot.com/
asked me to do Brady's 6th birthday cake ... of course I'm a little partial to 6 year old boys ... because our own Hank is turning 6 this week too! AND ... Brady & Hank are buddies in the same Kindergarten class! Nothing sweeter than boys ... don't get me wrong little girls are great too ... but something about little boys and my love bug Hank ... he has always been a snuggler since day 1 and still lets me call him my love bug! I love how he gives me compliments and notices all the little things like even when I've had my toe nails painted! I love how he always has to give me a kiss AND a hug. I love how he winks at me and raises his eyebrows ... makes me laugh everytime! I had lunch today with my love bug and love sitting with the Kindergarten boys and listening to all their stories, being called Mrs. Phillips and well, of course how many times they can burp ... they are all so sweet & polite ... well most of the time! So here's to being 6 and sweet and snuggly and so adorable! Happy 6th Birthday Brady!

Happy 8th Birthday to my sweet Hannah!

Can she really be 8? Seems like we were just getting everything ready for our 1st baby not that long ago...everything from attempting puffy clouds on pink walls (not so much clouds but we just went with a basic pink...cotton candy to be exact!), putting the crib together (well, I left the room), decorating her room (which included a wall border...I tried to help, but I wasn't that much of a help so once again, Torie came through...I tried not to "direct" too much!), getting all her clothes washed & ready and just so ready to put our new baby in her room! I can remember when my sister in law was planning our shower ... she wanted to plan it September 16 and how I thought that may be to close to when I would be having Hannah ... after all, I was due Oct 3 but lo & behold, we had plenty of time seeing that she decided to wait and "cook" a bit longer and not make her sweet debut until October 11. What a beautiful fall day that was ... this fall weather always reminds me of having Hannah and coming home to windows open and taking her on her first official walk @ Shawnee Mission Park (dog park of course with our 1st baby, Brittany). Even though all of this seems like yesterday, we had so much fun since then (well, there were those 1st two weeks where we weren't sure what we had done and Torie was so sweet, we were both tired and out of solutions, so he just pulled up a blanket & a pillow and slept on her floor by her crib ... nothing sweeter than that!).

So back to Hannah turning 8 .... she is so cute about it all and
yesterday she just said, "mom, it's fun saying you are 8!" What a sweet & happy girl we have been blessed with. What a sweet & perfect blessing from above who was so wonderfully made .... I know my mom is celebrating every minute from Heaven and she loved being a part of every bit of Hannah & Hank's lives .... thank you mom for instilling your legacy in us! Happy Birthday Hannah!

So fun to be 4!

Batman Cake #2 - Walker's 4th Birthday

Batman is back ... and much more detailed I might add! I was so excited when my friend Mary asked me to make a Batman cake for Mr. Walker (the cutest boy who just turned 4!)  ... not only do I like Batman (and yes, the 1st Batman movie with Michael Keaton WAS the BEST ... hands down!) but creating a Batman cake is awesome! Probably the best thing about the cake was, of course the memories it brought back of my sweet Hank (Hankie, Hanker, the Hankenator) when he turned 4 AND had a Batman cake! So fun to think back of my baby Hank (who is about turn 6) and his BIG 4 year old birthday.

Batman Cake #1 - Hank's 4th Birthday
It seems like I was just checking into the hospital to have him and now my little love bug is in Kindergarten and about to be 6! I'm so thankful for Hank's sweet, sweet spirit and passion that I just can't wait for many, many more ... Happy FUN 4th Birthday Walker!

Oh to be 10 again....

I can totally remember being 10 and in the 5th grade ... well, at least some if it, but I do remember my 5th grade teacher, Mrs. Bove @ Overland Park Elementary and thinking that our class was almost the top of the class (you know back in the olden days .... elementary school was K-6 and then it was junior high ... now that's another blog post .... terrified in 7th grade!) Okay, back to 5th grade .... new school subjects & switching classes, walking to school (when it was safe), making those cool "glue" finger nails with dried glue (that of course we made inside our metal desks), the rumor of the "clown in the black van" driving around picking up kids, playing tetherball and wishing I was really good at tetherball on the playground (which I never remembering winning ... there was always one girl (Nikki) who always won and was super cool), wishing I was cool and friends with the "cool girls" .... funny, thinking back on all these things and realizing what really matters now and how not much of that was important. I want to explain all these things to Hannah & Hank so they don't worry about what kids say and do but guess some of it they have to go through and make those decisions for themselves. I'm just always in "protective mode" and want to shield them from the pain and getting their feelings hurt.
However, they are so happy go lucky and pretty resilient & thankful they are good at holding their own ... so enough about me and being 10 but more about the birthday @ hand! Happy 10th  Birthday Devin! Hope you had a fabulous party and welcome to your tweens! Which btw ... totally NOT ready for my baby to turn 10!

Birthday Blessings....Party #2!

Well...Miss Ava Maria should be good & worn out from her second 1st birthday party...what a blessed little girl to have such a loving family & friends to help her celebrate her big day! A girl can never have too many birthday party celebrations ... right?  I remember getting ready for Hannah & Hank's first birthdays ... what kind of cake should I make? what should the theme be? what should they wear? how many pictures can I take of the cake, the party table, the decorations and of course H&H digging into their cakes (the best part!) .... ahhh, nothing like 1st birthdays and of course, they just get more fun from there.  Hard to believe we'll be celebrating Hannah's 8th birthday & Hank's 6th birthday in a few months and not much has changed for me ... still thinking about the cake, theme, etc., but now I get valuable & creative input from H&H ... and that's the icing on the cake!

1st Birthday Love

One of the many things I love about creating cakes, cookies and cupcakes are the stories & celebrations behind the design. I love the emotion and passion people have about their children and how their celebrations have no bounds. Today I had the joy of creating one of two 1st birthday celebrations ... party #1 was a "smash" cake and celebration cupcakes for Ms. Ava Maria who is turning 1. Ava Maria is a miracle child as her mom and dad have been through many challenges to have their Ava Maria blessing along with their other 2 children. As I sat & listened to Ava's mom share about her journey, my heart went out to here and I found myself loving my own two blessings more .... if that's possible.

Trying to not get emotional, I took notes on how Ava's goodies were going to be decorated for party #1 ... right down to the last squiggle. Who knew I could feel so blessed through baking ... thank you mom for letting your legacy shine through.

Thinking about mom...

Mom & I walking her last Ovarian Cancer Whisper Walk  Sept 2006
Although I haven't been super busy with cakes & cookies ... not a day goes by where I'm not thinking about my mom and wishing she was here. It'so hard to even type how much I miss her, let alone talk about it. It's been 3 1/2 years and seems harder to me for some reason. Maybe it's because of the peeps growing and changing so much and how I loved sharing all of it with my mom ... she loved to listen and of course, weigh in on all of their happenings.

Mom with Hannah & Hank & Cousin Devin
My mom would love that they love God & Jesus ... Hannah asked one day out of the blue, "mom, is everything better with God?" On one hand, I about feel apart, but then on the other hand, I felt like it was mom reminding me how good God is through my baby.  My mom loved celebrating their birthdays and of course, was always the first one to arrive and wondered where everyone else was.  My mom would love how they are learning @ church and school and all of their accomplishments. My mom would love to watch them sing @ church ... motions and all ... I always see so much of her in H&H when they're singing.  My mom would love that they both started school and would've been there for their 1st big days...maybe that's why there seems to be more emotion on those first school days because I'm thinking my mom will never get to see all this or their school programs ... part of her legacy living on.
Mom & baby Hank - December 2004
My mom was amazing and sometimes I wish I would've told her more ... I don't think I really realized all her & my dad did for us growing up until I had a family of my own.  As I'm changing sheets for the 3rd night in a row and doing laundry (which you know is just what we do as parents), I'm thinking, wow, my mom did all these things for the 4 of us day in ... day out ... and I never heard a word of it. All I know is I always had clean sheets, clean clothes, a clean house and food on the table.  Vacations were always something that just magically  happened whether by car, airplane in a tent, hotel ... and now after my husband & I have planned and executed, for the most part pretty seamlessly (only getting lost a few times and ending up in a lousy hotel) vacations, I truly am thankful for all my dad & mom did for me.

What a selfless example of unconditional love my mom was and I love how her legacy is living on through her grandchildren. Thank you for the sweet reminders mom. Love & miss you.

Take me back Star Wars...

I remember seeing Star Wars @ the old nostalgic Glenwood Theater down @ 91st & Metcalf ... whoa! Talk about a theater ... nothing compares to that theater ... definitely was the BEST! So when my friend Anne asked me if I could do a Stars Wars theme for her twin boys (Luke & Tanner who turned 6 today) ... I was all over it! I loved thinking back to the 1st Stars Wars movie...definitely the best one (in my opinion!) ... best scene, hands down, was the crazy bar scene with those crazy characters ... another fave movie of my mom's too ... course she talked through most of the movie ... but that was a "Colleen" movie trait ... really miss that now! She would've loved these ... thank you Anne for the memories!

Isn't she lovely?

Every time I hear that song...my mom comes to mind...she was definitely lovely in so many ways. I could call my mom anytime and she was always cheerful and had some nugget of truth to share with me...usually a Bible verse she had read that day. As my brother Eric said, "mom was always good for small talk"...I loved talking to my mom about something funny Hannah & Hank did or said...I could always count on her to laugh or cry with me...my mom was a lover of life and people and not a victim of boredom. What a legacy she left for me and many others...if I could be just an inkling of what she was...what a blessing that would be! Creating Colleen's Cakes & Cookies in her memory is a way for me to keep her legacy going and giving as she always so freely did...unconditionally...willing, able and ready to serve. Love & miss you mom!

Toy Story Love

I love creating all my cakes, cookies and cupcakes...but there was something special about creating my latest cake...Woody in Toy Story! I was so excited when my friend Jill asked me about doing a Toy Story cake for her sweet little boy Evan who turned 3.

A few weeks ago, we all went to see Toy Story 3...which for me was a bit emotional...I knew I was in trouble when I was getting "watery eyes" (as H&H say & always point out) during the opening song, "You've got a friend in me"...it wasn't just the words in the song but it was more the flood of memories that come with this movie and the first 2 Toy Story's...you see, this movie was one of my mom's favorites so when I come across my mom's "faves"...all the amazing things I loved about my mom just rush in and take over. I can remember seeing Toy Story 1 with her in the theater and how after a movie, she loved to "dance her way out" of the movie (yes, she did the same in Annie and pretty much any movie)...my mom was always happy and a lover of life. She had nothing to complain about and everything to live for...what a legacy she left and if I can be just an inkling of her, I will be forever grateful. This one's for you mom...miss & love you more than you know!

Happy 1st Birthday to Sweet Hailey!

Nothing sweeter than a 1st birthday....and I had the pleasure of doing the celebration cake for some friends of ours and their daughter's 1st birthday...Hailey! Of course, the cake IS the best part of a 1st birthday! Having been blessed with 2 peepers ourselves...we made a huge deal of their 1st birthday's and I think actually, it's more for the parents than the little peeper.

When Tricia asked me about doing Hailey's 1st birthday cake...she said Hailey's favorite blankie had a giraffe on it...surprised it wasn't a Jayhawk :) plus she had a giraffe rug in her room too...so a 1st giraffe birthday cake it was! I LOVED doing this cake...it's always fun to create new designs and the best part is figuring out exactly how I'm going to create the cake! Even my sweet Hannah asked me as I was getting ready to cut out the giraffe..."mom, how are you going to do that?"...great question Hannah! That's the fun part...I never really know until I get into the design! Don't let that scare you all from ever ordering up a creative design!

Once again, I'm blessed by doing these cakes, cookies & cupcakes for my friends and family...thank you for letting me help complete your celebrations! You are the icing on the cake! HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY HAILEY!

Birthday Baseballs!

Nothing better than seeing the faces of 5 year old boys after one hot & heated tee-ball game...GO BLUE ROCKETS....when they are served up baseball cookies with their names...so cute! My friend Traci (GO STEVEN) was up for tee-ball treats plus it was Steven's 5th brithday and asked me if I'd create some baseball themed cookies...oh yeah, I was definitley down with that! Talk about fun creating baseballs...once all 36 were iced...it was on to putting the boys' names...then I needed to add more baseball-ey (word?) stuff...so who did I turn to? The Coach! Coach Torie that is...he was quick to help, along with Hannah & Hank on what other words I could write on the cookies...so along with names...we had, the bases and many different calls! I really loved doing these cookies...they were definitely a HIT! Happy 5th Baseball Birthday Steven!

Absolute Ariel!

I so love my repeaters...repeat cakes & cookies, that is...I do have some pretty great friends and especially love creating cakes & cookies for all of their kiddos....what a blessing! Speaking of blessings...I had that privilege again this weekend! A friend of mine came back for fun cakes! This time was for her daughter, Ella who turned 5 and I will have to say a big 5 year old fave is....Ariel from The Little Mermaid...definitely still one of my fave Disney movies...so you probably already know how I feel about doing Ariel...yep, you guessed it...LOVE her! This time it was Ariel and all her co-horts (Flounder, etc) on cupcakes...lots of sprinkles, butter cream frosting, fondant and candy to top it all off! Nothing more festive than seeing a "sea" of Little Mermaid cupcakes...and the variety didn't stop there...there were 36 cupcakes...1/2 chocolate & 1/2 vanilla....yes, my friends...I pretty much accept any kind of creation and flavor of cakes, cookies or cupcakes...BRING it! From under the sea up to the birthday party...Happy 5th Ariel Birthday to Ms. Ella!

Howdy Pilgrim!

One of the many things I love about creating cakes & cookies are all the very fun, very festive & very creative ideas my friends come up with...love it! My latest request was around someone having a cute cowboy crush on John Wayne...yes, John Wayne! A friend of mine, Gina was surprising her sister (in law..I think) with some John Wayne cookies before their Trader Joe's run via St. Louis...now that is just plain sweet! So, when Gina asked me about creating some John Wayne cookies...of course, I said Yes without even thinking how I was going to go about coming up with John Wayne cookies...but that's the best part..figuring it all out! I found a few ideas and sent them to Gina and her sister in law loved the JW silhouette...it was pretty cool! Now for the creative part...making sugar dough..no problem...cutting out round circles...no problem...making buttercream frosting...no problem...creating a JW silhouette out of frosting...well, this is where the creativity & a steady hand comes in! To make a long story short (I do tend to be long winded at times...), they were so fun to bring to life...and even my sweet Hannah, stopped by and said, "mom, they look like cowboys!"...that was the icing on the cookie ;)

50 Fabulous Years of Marriage!

Now that my friends is something to be proud of...what a sweet blessing that is for some friends of ours (around the corner...yes, we live in an awesome neighborhood!), celebrating with parents for 50 years of marriage. Torie & I are headed toward 10 years this July...can't believe we're already @ 10 and can't imagine what 50 will be like...fabulous, I'm sure! Now, back to the celebration @ hand...I felt so honored to be creating such an important accomplishment with a cake! Melissa asked me if I could create the 50 year Anniversary cake and of course, I said yes! She was concerned she may be late in asking...but rest assured...there's always time for cake, and cookies and cupcakes...that's how we roll around here...much more fun to be sporatic & spur of the moment..well, most days! Back to cake creations...I looked around for some different ideas and sent them to M&M...they decided on the chic & classic...the BIG 5-0 with the honorees wedding picture on the cake to boot! I LOVED the idea and once I had the image scanned in, I knew that would complete the cake. This was such a special and fun cake to create because marriage is such a blessed & sacred union and here Mike's parents have made it to 50 years of wedded bliss...I can't wait for Torie & I to celebrate our 50 years one day...for now, we're working toward 10 Totally Terrific Years! Happy Golden Anniversary!

Skateboardin' into Summer!

Can I just tell you how blessed I am everytime I create cakes, cookies or cupcakes? Well...if I haven't...I'm telling you now! Nothing better than delivering the goods and seeing the smiles on my friends faces...that my friends makes this so FUN! I got to experience this again last week when a friend of mine @ work asked me about making some cookies for her 11 year old son Max's birthday...of course, I said yes. And when she asked about doing skateboards...of course, I said yes. I always say yes and then later figure out how I'm going to create what I'm creating...because that's how I roll! I love a good challenge and making things creative...so, no skateboard cookie cutter...time to get creative! So, made the sugar cookie dough the night before, thinking that nite how am I going to create a skateboard? Next day, rolling the dough and looking through all my gadgets for something that resembles a skateboard...lo & behold, I used one of sweet spreaders (thank you Jodith & Pampered Chef!) to make the main part and then just cut out circles for wheels...and those candy necklaces came in very handy! Next up was the frosting and totally tublar designs! Talk about fun with color, frosting and toothpicks...who knew? To make a long story (because I could go on) short, I loved how the cookies turned out and when I delivered to the birthday boy...he guessed correctly they were skateboards (a couple of them could've doubled for the Oscar Meyer Wiener Mobile) and I got that big smile I so love! Happy 11th Birthday Max!

Margo Madness!

So who knew going to the gym more than once a week would pay off? Back a few months ago, a friend of mine & I decided to attempt a Boot Camp Class @ PF...little did we know we would barely be able to walk, let along sit down the next day! Needless to say...it was an awesome class! You're probably asking yourself, why are you talking about working out when this is a cake & cookies blog? Well...I'm getting to that..hold your horses! Back to Boot Camp...the reason the class was so great was because the instructor was awesome! Ms. Angie was the nicest yet tough Boot Camp Chic ;) And for some reason, we just clicked...well, if you ask my husband, that tends to happen with me...anyway, I continued to see Angie & the gym (when I was there) and then I'd see her other places around town...specifically Jalapenos! One nite, we were chatting outside after dinner/beverages and somehow started talking about cakes...well, one thing led to another and she needed a cake...a Margarita Birthday Cake! Woo hoo...talk about a FUN & FESTIVE cake! So...what's the moral here? Keep on keepin' on @ the gym...you just never know what you may get out of it...fitness & friends!

Happy Summer!

Hello cakes & cookies friends! We had the pleasure of going to one of our many fabulous neighbors for a Memorial Day Gathering...was soooo much fun! Torie & I just feel so blessed by our neighbors (friends) and love having so many kiddos for our peeps to play with! I thought it would be fun to create some kind of summer kick-off cake...so, because we alway seem to be @ the pool (we clocked 3 days this past weekend already!)...what better way to kick-off summer than with a pool cake! This cake was super fun to create...lots 'o candy (somewhere around 10 packs of gum!) and teddy grahams (sun bathers) to boot! The most fun part was "dressing" the bears...I mean, how do you begin putting a bikini on a teddy graham...minus the one nude bear-bather...LOL? Needless to say it...I loved it and when it came to picking out just the right candy...my sweet Hannah completed the look by picking out sour something or other for the towels...was perfect! Happy Summer!

Let there be Cosmos!

What would a bachelorette party be without Cosmos...cookies that is! A friend of mine so graciously asked me if I could "mix up" some Cosmos (with a twist & some bling!) for the bachelorette party she was hosting last week....and of course, I said YES! These cookies were so fun to cut out (by hand because there wasn't a cookie cutter big enough) and looked good enough to drink! My peepers, Hannah & Hank especially had fun looking at them and asking all kinds of questions about Cosmos and things that go along with Cosmos...so I changed the subject! Thank you Anne for letting create your Cosmos...Bottoms up!

ROCK CHALK...Congrats Ashley & best of luck!

A good friend of mine asked me about a month ago to create her daughter, Ashley's graduation cake from KU...whoa! What an honor! I was so excited to come up with a "cake-like" Jayhawk that resembled such a cool bird...even though in our house we represent several colleges. My husband went to Nebraska (Go Skers'!), I went to K-State (Go Cats!) and well, Hannah sometimes wants to go to Nebraska and K-State while Hank is our resident Jayhawk fan...he was the most excited about this cake! So...back to creating this guy...'er Mr. Jayhawk! I chatted with Karen and showed her some ideas and it all came down to the good 'ole Jayhawk...she was surprising Ashley and only asked what flavor...LOVE it! Off to create the Jayhawk...I started with baking a 1/2 sheet cake which so graciously "fell" right out of the pan (gotta love that as a baker!)...then it was off to decide which way to "cut" or "trace" Mr. Jayhawk (after awhile, I start referring to my cakes as him or her....scary, I know!)...I even consulted my husband...it was a tall, skinny Jayhawk or short, squaty Jayhawk...we went with tall & skinny! Once I got "him" traced out and cut....it was off to decorate...I always love "bringing these cakes to life"...I say that alot but it's so true. I was telling Karen and her husband, Jerry when I dropped "him" off, that Mr. Jayhawk started to "come to life" once I got his big blue eye on there...I so loved doing this cake! Thank you Karen for asking me to do Ashley's cake...I'm just so blessed and love making all my friends and families celebrations "come to life"!

Let there be doggies!

My friend Kim called me a couple weeks ago to get the creative juices flowing for her sweet daughter's cake...it was kind of a funny conversation in that Ashley had a very specific design complete with specific details in mind. Kim was kind of laughing as she was describing the cake....here's kind of how it went..."Now feel free to tell me if you can't do this...but Ashley would like a chocolate lab cake." Me, "okay, that sounds fun!". Kim, kind of laughing, "but wait there's more, she wants the collar on the dog to be rainforest color, no wait (Ashley in the background) turquoise with orange, then Kim said, "Ashley, how about turquoise with hot pink"...and actually as you can see from the picture, I went with hot pink collar & turquoise name only because the background sky was blue (another request). I LOVED doing this cake and even more LOVED all the details too...and you should've seen the look on Ashley's face when I delivered the cake...priceless and the reason I love creating cakes & cookies! Thank you, thank you, thank you Kim & Ashley! Thank you also for having my Hannah...she had a fabulous time and I even got to taste the cake...YUM! Happy Birthday Ashley!

May the "G-Force" be with you!

So...yesterday I had the pleasure and FUN of creating guinea pigs on a cookie...I know what you're thinking...what? a guinea-pig on a cookie? yuck! Well...a friend of mine so kindly referred me to a friend of hers who has a son turning 6 today! She was laughing herself when she let me know what theme "Jack" wanted for his birthday cookies...G-Force! How in the world can you turn a cookie into a guinea pig...and for that matter...does a guinea pig cookie cutter exist? Well...to my surprise (and probably yours)...it does! Pretty much it looks like a blob of something with a dangling foot...okay, well, I'm opted for a circular cookie with a guinea pig face...talk about FUN! Loved putting on the furry fur and those beady black eyes...the icing on the cookie (haha) was the little pink nose, mouth and whiskers...who knew guinea pigs could be cute? So...lo & behold, guinea pig G-Force cookies can be created & celebrated! What a lucky group of guinea pigs!

Happy Spring...or, ah the end of Winter! Anyway....doesn't really matter since spring really is coming...my tulips are trying to make their way up!
I had the honor of doing TWO birthday cakes this weekend...one for a very 1st birthday...Mr. Kaleb turned one and had a monkey theme going on...and Ms. Tori turned 7 and she is an ice skating champ...hence the ice skating cake!
Happy Birthday to TWO darling peepers!
Now...bring on the spring and more celebrations & cakes!

Spring Cakes!

Hooray....spring is less than one month away (well by one day!) and my latest creation...a ladybug cake really has me looking forward to spring!

Let me know what your cake & cookie needs and how we can make your event a party!
